Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a short-term (8 to 20 sessions) and structured approach to couples therapy focusing on negative communication patterns and love as an attachment bond.
The “attachment” between partners generally provides an emotionally ‘safe haven,’ providing the couple a sense of comfort, security and a buffer against life’s many stressors. It also provides individuals in a committed relationship a ‘secure base’, allowing each person a feeling of safety while navigating the environment in which they live.
Each partner brings into their relationship and established pattern from childhood into their adult romantic relationships. When in conflict, each partner may feel their partner is unavailable or unresponsive to their needs, creating distress in their relationship.
Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, provides therapists with a guide to help couples recognize their negative interactive patterns, the drama of distress, and the emotional needs between partners, to create a more emotionally safe, committed and connected relationship. EFT can help couples become more accessible, responsive and engaged with each other, strengthening their bond of attachment.
